Before an individual debtor can file a bankruptcy, he or she will have to take a credit counseling course.  The credit counseling course must be taken before a bankruptcy can be filed.  In cases where a married couple files for bankruptcy, both spouses must complete the credit counseling course.  A second class, which is referred to as a debtor education class, must be completed before a debtor can receive a discharge of his or her bankruptcy.  These credit counseling classes are available on line and costs generally run between $30.00 to $50.00.
